Casting the Family Vision for 2025

Casting the Family Vision for 2025

January 07, 2025

When it comes to building a life with intention, few habits are more powerful than hitting pause, reflecting, and setting clear goals for the road ahead. For my family, this isn’t just something we do—it’s a tradition. Every year, we gather as a family to ask important, sometimes uncomfortable, questions that set the tone for our future.

It’s not perfect. Sometimes it’s very vulnerable. But it’s worth it.

In this post, I want to walk you through why setting a family vision matters, what kind of questions you can ask to get started, and how this practice can create clarity, alignment, and growth for your family in 2025.

Why a Family Vision Matters

Let’s be honest: life gets chaotic. Work demands your energy, your kids pull you in a thousand directions, and your finances often become reactive instead of intentional. If we’re not careful, we set the cruise control at 80 mph and forget to check where we’re going.

Creating space to reflect and cast a shared vision ensures your family’s priorities remain front and center. When everyone at the table is honest about their hopes, fears, and goals, incredible things happen:

  • You normalize hard conversations.
  • You align on what really matters—together.
  • You create accountability and a shared sense of purpose.

Over the past decade, my family has done this exercise year after year. It started small—maybe an hour with my wife and kids—and has grown into a multi-day process that includes our extended family.

Now, I won’t sugarcoat it: it’s awkward at first. But once you push through that resistance, the results are transformational.

10 Questions to Start Your Year With Intention

When we sit down together as a family, we start by answering questions that get us thinking about where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we want to go. These aren’t surface-level questions—they require vulnerability and honesty.

Here are 10 questions to kickstart your family vision for 2025:

What are the three areas I’m most afraid of right now?
Fear loses its power when you put it on the table. Whether it’s about finances, career, or relationships, this question invites honesty.

What am I believing about those fears that might need to be challenged?
Sometimes, the way we think about a problem holds us back more than the problem itself.

What are the two or three areas I need to grow in this year—personally or professionally?
Growth doesn’t happen without clarity. Call out the areas you want to improve and commit to the work.

What am I committing to now that I’m willing to be held accountable for?
A plan without accountability is just wishful thinking. Be specific about your commitments.

Who are the people I want to learn from spiritually this year?
Whether it’s a pastor, mentor, or author, surrounding yourself with wise voices fuels growth.

What relationships do I need to pour into more intentionally this year?
Relationships require time, energy, and intention. Who are the people who matter most to you?

Are there any relationships I need to step away from or set boundaries with?
Not every relationship is healthy. Sometimes growth means letting go.

What habits or cycles do I need to break this year?
Identify what’s holding you back—financially, emotionally, or spiritually—and make a plan to change it.

What’s my net worth, and how can I improve it?
Teach your family to think like a business: understand what you own, what you owe, and what needs to improve.

What does success look like for me—and for us—this year?
This is the big one. Define what a “good year” looks like for your family so you can work toward it together.

How to Make It Happen

  1. Set the Stage: Pick a time and place where you can focus. For us, this often means traveling as a family and creating space away from the day-to-day.
  2. Prepare Ahead of Time: Share the questions with your family in advance. Let everyone come to the table with thoughtful answers.
  3. Be Patient: These conversations might feel uncomfortable at first. Stick with it. Growth happens when we lean into hard moments.
  4. Keep It Realistic: You don’t have to nail everything perfectly this year. Progress is what matters.
  5. Follow Up: Revisit your vision throughout the year. What’s working? Where are you stuck? Adjust as needed.

Your Invitation to Lead

Here’s the truth: leadership starts at home. If you’re not intentional about where you and your family are headed, no one else will be. Setting a family vision doesn’t require perfection—it just requires you to start.

So, as you head into 2025, I want to challenge you: slow down. Ask the hard questions. And take ownership of your family’s future.
